EmpireBuilder 1.8
This is an Help tool for Games
Mactivity's CD-ROM nr 10 advice: This application did
run on a b/w 68030 processor under System 7.1. It was
also tested on a big ColorScreen of a PowerMacintosh
running The game was also tested on a Quadra with 68040
processor and a 13 inch Color Screen and System 7.1
by Mactivity. 68040 processor.
Version 1.7 turned out to be a bit of a disaster, due
to one bug (which was in the missile logic, as it turns
out) which caused, for at least some users, rather
frequent crashes. We apologize for the inconvenience
this caused. (The problems with printing the order
form which some users also experienced have also been,
we hope, resolved.)
Version 1.8 contains two major new features, which cause
some of the material in the Version 1.7 documentation
file to be wrong.
a) First of all, the demo release does NOT contain an
EB Prefs file. Empire Builder will create this file
for you the first time it is run. (Including one with
the release was really unnecessary - it merely added
to the size of the release.) EB will create this file
in your system folder. If you wish, you may move it
to the same folder as the EB application file. EB will
find it in either place.
b) Version 1.8 has an entirely new, optional, dimension
to the production side of the game. This made the "rules"
of the game very much more extensive, and, consequently,
necessitated moving all the logic for editing those
rules outside of the program itself. (For the confused
reader - Empire Builder allows one to vary the rules
under which the game is played quite dramatically via
its rule editing functions. This feature has always
been completely disabled in our demo releases - which
now means we simply are not including the rule editor
application with the demo.) For various reasons, we
decided to only include only one rule set in the demo
release instead of two, as described in the documentation.
(Indeed, the entire mechanism for creating, installing,
editing, and choosing a rule set has changed completely
under V1.8.) The rule set included conforms, in general,
the set described as "Chris' EB Rules" in
the V1.7 Demo Documentation.
c). EB now has the ability to open more than one map
window, and includes complete freedom to move and resize
the windows at will. One simply uses the New command
in the file menu to open a new window once a game has
been started, and the Open command to change the current
window's characteristics. (To start an entirely new
game, one has to exit EB and restart it.)
To better illustrate these new features, the full V1.8
documentation addendums are include with the demo release.
Of course, many of the features described in that material,
especially in relation to rule editing, are either
disabled or not included in the demo release.
